The Rattler / Shiners Run Loop

If you ask riders around here for their favorite road, NC 209 comes up every time. Known as The Rattler, it twists north from Haywood County toward Hot Springs through a mix of tight mountain curves, quiet farm valleys, and stretches of Pisgah National Forest. It has all the character of the more famous roads, with far less traffic.
The loop starts just a short ride from our shop and joins NC 209 near Ferguson Supply in Fines Creek. From there, the road winds north along creeks and through valleys, past old farms, small churches, and mountain overlooks. Along the way, the loop picks up part of the stretch riders know as Shiner’s Run.
Hot Springs is the natural halfway stop. The town sits on the French Broad River and has places to eat, fuel up, and stretch your legs, along with the mineral springs it’s named for. From there, the loop follows the river toward Marshall, then climbs back over the mountains on NC 63 to rejoin 209 for the ride home. Every mile is new, with no backtracking.
This road rewards focus. The curves are tight and come one after another, and after rain, gravel can wash into the corners. Watch for farm equipment and wildlife in the valley sections, take your time, and ride within your experience.
Part of The Long Way: The Rattler is one of the three legendary rides in our Slay the Serpents challenge, along with the Copperhead Loop and the Tail of the Dragon. Ride all three, document the checkpoints, and earn the shirt.
