Skull Cracker

The Skull Cracker earns its name. This loop links some of the twistiest, least-traveled pavement in the southern Blue Ridge with the lake country around Cashiers, and it keeps you busy from start to finish. If you love technical roads more than straightaways, this is your ride.
The loop heads south through Sylva to Cullowhee, home of Western Carolina University, then on to the small community of Tuckasegee, where the real riding begins. NC 281 runs south from Tuckasegee to Lake Toxaway through remote mountain forest, passing a string of lakes and climbing over Owens Gap. It’s tight, steep, and lightly traveled, with corner after corner and very few cars to share them with.
At Lake Toxaway, the loop turns west on US 64. Just past the lake, the road crosses the bridge over Toxaway Falls, then winds through Sapphire toward Cashiers, a mountain crossroads town with places to eat and fuel up. From Cashiers, NC 107 carries you north along the shores of Lake Glenville, one of the highest lakes in the eastern mountains, before dropping back through Tuckasegee and Cullowhee for the ride home.
This loop rewards focus. NC 281 has tight, sometimes blind corners, steep grades, and few services, so top off your tank before you leave Cullowhee or Tuckasegee. Watch for gravel and debris in the corners, especially after rain, and for cyclists on the quieter stretches. Ride within your experience and give yourself time to enjoy the views on the way back.
