Gary Bohler Hwy / Moonshiner 28 Loop

This loop pairs two of the far western mountains’ best roads into one big day. Wayah Road, also known as the Gary Bohler Highway, gives you tight, technical mountain riding. Moonshiner 28 gives you river-valley curves and a little history. Together they make a ride that feels completely different from one half to the next.
Wayah Road runs the full distance between the Nantahala Gorge and Franklin. On the gorge side, it climbs alongside the Nantahala River, with rushing water and small waterfalls right off the shoulder. Near the top, you pass Nantahala Lake before the road turns serious, with steep grades, switchbacks, and tight, blind corners through deep forest. Traffic is light, mostly locals and trout fishermen near the river.
From Franklin, you pick up Moonshiner 28 heading north toward Bryson City. NC 28 earned its name from moonshine runners who used these back roads to stay ahead of the law. This stretch follows the Little Tennessee River through a quiet valley, and the curves come quickly in the miles before it meets US 19/74. From there, it’s an easy run into Bryson City, a great place to stop for food or a cold drink before heading home.
Treat Wayah Road with respect. Guardrails are sparse in places, the drop-offs are real, and patches of gravel and debris can collect in the corners, especially after rain or road work. The higher elevations can also be noticeably cooler than the valleys, so bring a layer. Ride within your experience and give yourself time to enjoy the views.
