Chimney Rock / Lake Lure Loop

This loop pairs the waterfalls of Pisgah National Forest with the dramatic cliffs of Hickory Nut Gorge, and it sticks to scenic back roads wherever it can. It’s a great choice for riders who want big scenery, small mountain towns, and a full day of easygoing curves.
The ride starts on US 276, climbing from Bethel Valley over the Blue Ridge Parkway and down through Pisgah National Forest on the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway. This stretch passes some of the most popular stops in the region, including Looking Glass Falls, which sits right beside the road, and Sliding Rock. The road winds down along the Davidson River to Pisgah Forest, just outside Brevard.
From there, the loop heads east toward Hendersonville and then drops into Hickory Nut Gorge, where the road follows the Rocky Broad River beneath towering granite cliffs. The village of Chimney Rock sits right along the river, with the famous rock formation high above. A few miles farther, the gorge opens up to Lake Lure, one of the most scenic mountain lakes in North Carolina.
Leaving Lake Lure, Bills Creek Road climbs out of the valley on a quiet, winding back road with very little traffic. The loop then works west on local roads through the countryside south of Asheville and back toward the shop, avoiding the interstate and keeping the ride relaxed all the way home.
Expect traffic around the waterfall pull-offs on US 276 and in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure on summer and fall weekends, and watch for pedestrians and stopped cars near popular stops. Gravel and leaves can collect in the corners on the back roads, especially after rain. Ride within your experience and leave time to stop and take in the views.
