Introduction
Our adventure to Swan Cabin began on a rainy afternoon as we eagerly awaited the arrival of my husband, Bryan, who got home from work around 4:15 pm. Despite the forecast predicting rain and having watched it pour for the past two hours, we were determined to start our journey.
The Motorcycle Ride Begins
At 4:30 pm, the rain had subsided, and our group of five riders, including myself and Bryan, set off. We felt a sense of relief as we departed, hoping the weather would hold. However, our hopes were short-lived as we reached the Whittier overpass and the rain returned. Two members of our party stopped to don their rain gear. Unfortunately, as we pulled back into traffic, one rider dropped his motorcycle but quickly recovered, and we continued our ride.
Dinner Stop at Roy's Nutz and Buttz Smoked BBQ
By the time we arrived in Robinsville around 6:30 pm, the rain had ceased once more. We decided to take a break and have dinner at Roy's Nutz and Buttz Smoked BBQ, where we enjoyed some delicious food (details to follow in the Restaurants Experienced post). This stop gave us a much-needed respite from the rain and a chance to dry off before continuing our journey.
Heading to Swan Cabin
After leaving the restaurant, we were officially on our way to Swan Cabin. Despite a steady sprinkle and overcast skies affecting our visibility, we pressed on. The real challenge began as we started the gravel portion of our ride. Unbeknownst to me at the time, a huge rattlesnake, about 2 feet long, had crossed our path just as we turned onto the gravel road. I found out later during our conversations at the cabin.
The gravel roads were soft, often muddy and slippery, adding to the difficulty of the ride. With little experience riding in such conditions, my adrenaline was high, and I found myself standing up for most of the 11 miles, which led to significant fatigue in my legs. We faced steep elevation gains and the dense forest's low visibility, making the journey even more challenging.
Arriving at Swan Cabin
Finally, we arrived at Swan Cabin, where we unloaded the bikes and assessed the primitive accommodations. We were aware from reviews that the cabin might have mice and bats, which is to be expected in such a remote location. We encountered one bat flying through the inside, and another member of our group reported hearing them squeaking through the night—an eerie reminder of the cabin's rustic charm.
Reflecting on the Day
After unpacking, we sat on the front porch, enjoyed a beverage, and reminisced about the day's ride. Despite the challenges we faced, the experience was exhilarating and set the tone for the rest of our adventure.
